We build Aquascape Ecosystem ponds which work with nature, making it simple and easy to keep your new water feature looking beautiful with minimal effort.
Creating a well-balanced ecosystem reduces maintenance and supports healthy fish and plants while transforming your backyard into an incredible, all-natural, low-maintenance paradise. These are great as fish ponds, frog ponds, or even turtle ponds. If you’d like one for your ducks we can build that too – it just needs more filtration. These can be scaled to any size from a small 2 x 3m pond to 100m2 or more.
The freshwater also attracts an incredible amount of life above the surface. A world of birds and insects attracted to the freshwater ecosystem. In Perth we regularly see species like Black tailed cockatoos, New Holland Honey eaters, dragonflies, bees and damsel flies and many more. Ground dwelling animals like to visit too – Bandicoots, lizards and even the family hound love a cool drink and a freshwater swim from time to time.
Ecosystem ponds are a freshwater habitat in your own backyard to enjoy, observe and engage with, to reconnect with nature.
Something that’s often missing in todays busy world and ever present technology. Nature that many of us grew up with and took for granted.
Think Green are your Western Austalian Aquascape ecosystem pond experts and have been building ecosystem ponds in and around Perth for clients since 2015. We have experience building ponds in all kinds of soil types from sand to clay to gravel and even in solid rock! And they can be sized and scaled to suit almost any property. From acreage to regular suburban house blocks, and sometimes even villas and townhouses if you have enough space and access.
As well as looking totally natural, the Aquascape system and products we use makes them easier to maintain. There’s no more climbing into the pond to check and clean your pump or filter. A skimmer houses the pump, and filters out leaves and debris that would clog a normal pond pump usually found sitting on the pond floor. The skimmer also provides easy access to the pump and plumbing while hiding it from view. The Biofalls waterfall filter is the origin of a beautiful natural stream or waterfall and is disguised into the garden with plants and rocks, breaking down fish waste and other organic matter into nutrients that the plants in the pond can use for their own growth. The Biofalls filter generally only needs to be cleaned and backwashed annually making keeping on top of a clean filter really easy. No more weekly or monthly backwashing of canister or drum filters!
If you’re thinking about an Aquascape ecosystem pond in your garden please fill out the inquiry form at the bottom of this page and let’s see how we can help.
How much does an ecosystem pond cost?
There are a few common sizes that we build with guide pricing listed here, but we can build these in virtually ANY size or shape though as we use a strong and flexible EPDM pond liner as our base. For up to 20,000 litre ponds we recommend using the range of Aquascape Biofalls Filters. For ecosystem ponds larger than this you could either use more than one Biofalls filter or upgrade to an Aquascape upflow wetland filter like we use in our swimming pond projects.
Extra features like chunky jetty style decks, boardwalk decking paths and even completing the surrounding landscaping are all things we can help you with too. Please ask.

How does an ecosystem pond function?
In order to have great success with your new pond, it helps to understand the critical role each component plays in the ecosystem.
1. Skimmer – the skimmer filter removes debris from the pond, providing efficient mechanical filtration and keeping your pond clean and clear.
2. Biofalls – Biological filtration is provided by the BioFalls filter. The BioBalls™ and filter mats provide surface area for bacteria to colonize, maintaining the pond effectively by keeping it clean throughout the year. (In the case of bigger ponds we use the Aquascape upflow wetland filter)
3 & 4 Pump & Piping – Water movement and circulation is another extremely important component to the ecosystem pond approach. Proper water flow throughout the pond maintains necessary oxygen levels, optimizes water quality and minimizes maintenance in your pond.
5. Rocks & Gravel – The rocks and gravel in your new pond play a crucial role in your ecosystem, providing tremendous surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. Similar to your BioFalls, these bacteria help to break down excess nutrients in the water and dissolved organic debris on the pond floor.
6. Pond Liner & Underlayment – We use Firestone EPDM rubber pond liner with a lifetime warranty. It is a very high quality liner with excellent flexibility and capacity to stretch
7. Plants and Fish – Aquatic plants are the foundation of every water garden or ecosystem pond. Aquatic plants help balance your entire pond ecosystem, minimizing maintenance and maximizing optimum water conditions. Plants absorb nitrogen, ammonia, nitrates and other minerals that can lead to unsightly water conditions.
Pond fish are an integral part of your ecosystem. Fish minimize algae growth by stirring up and grazing on excess string algae growing in the pond. In addition, fish waste provides important nutrients for your aquatic plants.
The Process From Here
Once we receive this form back in full, we can email back and forth a couple of times and/or arrange a phone call to get an idea of the scope of your project and give you a guide to the expected budget range. We have built a lot of Aquascape systems in a wide variety of sizes over the last five years so have a great portfolio of projects and pricing that we can use as a guide. At this stage we’re also happy to offer guide pricing details of any of our past projects that you might have seen.
We’ll look at your photos you send through and also look up your garden on recent Nearmaps aerial photos as we are talking or emailing to get familiar with your garden and property, and what your waterscape dreams and goals are.
We offer this introduction service to find out a bit more about project ideas and scope of work, to give you a guide to expected budget and to make sure we’re the right fit for you before you engage our services for a paid onsite consultation visit.
What is a Think Green Consult
Tony, our leader of design and operations, will attend your property and discuss options with you and other key decision makers in the project.
We usually charge $220 for an onsite visit consultation (in Perth area and surrounds) to talk about your ideas and for you to pick Tony’s brain for more ideas and information too. The consultation in most cases also includes a concept sketch plan and detailed quote with a guide to timelines.
We also include the Aquascape ‘Hands of the Artist’ hardcover coffee table book (arund 350 pages of Aquascape artistic water features for inspiration and ideas). As Master Certified Aquascape Contractors, one of our projects is featured in the book on page 310. (We will post the book in advance for prepaid consultations)
